When one of the large mounds was investigated in 1978, it was found to contain an exceptionally rich aristocratic burial. Beneath the mound, below ground-level, was a raft of huge, ancient wooden beams, preserved by waterlogging: when these were lifted they proved to be roof timbers, revealing a suite of large burial chambers.
When all the water and mud was pumped out they were found to be filled with all manner of grave-goods.
In the central chamber a massive lacquered timber framework, still standing, supported a large collection of bells. On the floor were stacked many elaborate and costly bronze vessels, and everywhere were tumbled lacquered furniture, other wooden objects and musical instruments.
In the eastern chamber were the decorated coffins of the dead man, his 10 concubines, and his dog. In the western chamber were another 11 female attendants.
